Relicario is a site-specific artistic intervention created for the Cathedral of Santa María de Tui to mark the eighth centenary of its consecration. The work originates in the Chapel of the Relics, a room within the temple where an eighteenth-century altar holds relics of the saints, kept in cabinets. We call a reliquary the case that cares for and preserves whatever it contains. At times we wear it around the neck, like a small place to keep our memories. From that idea comes this installation of eight hundred pieces printed in transparent biodegradable filament, one for each year of the cathedral's existence.
Like beads of a necklace or prayers of a rosary, the pieces are arranged into eight strands that now clothe the monument. Their eight designs are engraved with motifs scanned in the Chapel of the Relics. Each piece honours the relics preserved there and the reliquaries that hold them, turned into new objects to venerate and protect. The cathedral is dressed in its own memories.
The intervention coexists with the architecture of the place. The transparent material lets the light pass through and allows the structure, the altars and the installation to be contemplated at the same time. The work never touches the floor, since it floats suspended from the upper naves. That suspension is the heart of the piece. Hanging on high, Relicario alludes to the celestial and the divine, to the thread that joins heaven and earth. Natural light crosses the filament and refracts in the crystals, casting glints over columns, walls and figures. The installation thus links the sacred and historical character of the cathedral with the art and technology of our time.
Other strands of small unengraved crystals complete the work. They refer to what is yet to come, to the years and memories the cathedral has still to create and share. Relicario celebrates the eighth centenary by looking to the past while leaving a luminous space for the centuries ahead.

Relicario es una intervención artística site-specific creada para la Catedral de Santa María de Tui con motivo del VIII centenario de su consagración. La obra nace de la Capilla de las Reliquias, una sala del templo donde un altar del siglo XVIII custodia reliquias de los santos, guardadas en armarios. Llamamos relicario a ese estuche que cuida y preserva aquello que contiene. A veces lo llevamos al cuello, como un pequeño lugar donde guardar nuestros recuerdos. De esa idea surge esta instalación de ochocientas piezas impresas en filamento transparente biodegradable, una por cada año de existencia de la catedral.
Como cuentas de una gargantilla o plegarias de un rosario, las piezas se organizan en ocho collares que ahora visten el monumento. Sus ocho diseños están grabados con motivos escaneados en la Capilla de las Reliquias. Cada pieza honra las reliquias que allí se conservan y los relicarios que las contienen, convertidos en nuevos objetos para venerar y proteger. La catedral queda vestida con sus propios recuerdos.
La intervención convive con la arquitectura del lugar. El material transparente deja pasar la luz y permite contemplar al mismo tiempo la estructura, los altares y la instalación. La obra no toca el suelo, ya que flota suspendida de las naves superiores. Esa suspensión es el corazón de la pieza. Colgada en lo alto, Relicario alude a lo celestial y a lo divino, al hilo que une el cielo con la tierra. La luz natural atraviesa el filamento y se refracta en los cristales, proyectando brillos sobre columnas, muros y figuras. La instalación enlaza así lo sagrado e histórico de la catedral con el arte y la tecnología actual.
Completan la obra otros collares de pequeños cristales sin grabar. Hacen referencia a lo que aún está por venir, a los años y recuerdos que la catedral tiene por crear y compartir. Relicario celebra el octavo centenario mirando el pasado y deja un espacio luminoso a los siglos venideros.
